Kanga Baby Carrier
Wearing Instructions |
One kanga instructions:
1. Lay the cloth out on a couch or low table with the longest side at
the bottom.
2.
Sit the baby diagonally so his or her legs straddle a lower corner. If
you want the sling to come over your left shoulder, sit the baby diagonally
in the lower left corner.
3.
Pull the ends of the fabric around the baby so that on the left side of
the fabric, one point goes through the baby's crotch and the other comes
around the baby's hip (leg sticking out). On the right side of the fabric,
the whole piece comes around the side of the baby's body (under or over
the armpit, depending on what you prefer).
3.
Pull the short ends of the fabric together and hold the bundle in one
hand. Lower your body to the baby's height and pull the baby onto your
back using your free hand. Keep holding the fabric tight as you do this.
Hoist the baby up on your back while leaning forward (you may find this
easier with help).
4.
Lean forward so the baby won't fall off your back. Pull the left hand
bundle of fabric tightly down over your shoulder. Pull the right hand
bundle of fabric up under your right armpit. Pull the bundles snugly together
to meet at your breastbone.
5.
Tie the bundles together into one knot. Or, if you prefer, tie one end
from the left hand bundle to one end from the right hand bundle, pull
the loose ends snug and repeat, so you have two knots. Small mamas may
find it easier to tie one knot; large-chested mamas may find it easier
to tie two knots. Be sure to keep the fabric snug so it holds the baby
close and high up on your back. Try to position the knots so they don't
put uncomfortable pressure on your breasts. You may find it easier to
wear a soft bra, or to go braless when using this carry.
Two kanga instructions:
1. Lay the cloth out horizontally with the longest side at the bottom.
2.
Sit the baby in about the middle of the fabric.

3.
Pull the short ends of the fabric together and hold the bundle in one
hand. Lower your body to the baby's height and pull the baby onto your
back using your free hand. Keep holding the fabric tight as you do this.
Hoist the baby up on your back while leaning forward (you may find this
easier with help).
4.
Pull the ends snug and tightly tie one knot above your breasts. (Traditionally
the fabric is folded under instead of knotted, but you may find a knot
to be more secure). The baby's legs should be hanging out on either side,
and the fabric should be snug under the baby's bottom.
5.
(Optional) Take the second piece of cloth and wrap it around the baby's
lower body for added security. Tie it snugly in front, under your breasts.

Note:
You can use the top corners of the second cloth to tie above your breasts
and the bottom corners to tie under your breasts for a kind of tube-top
look (not pictured).

[Many thanks to Amanda W. for these instructions. Says Amanda of her
kanga baby carrier: "I intend to use the kanga more as I find it
surprisingly snug and comfy."]
