Happy November! I hope this letter finds you all well.
| Traditional Baby Carriers (Amautiks) in the
Movies! |
 |
I was going to write about the best baby carrier to use
with a toddler while evacuating your home in front of an
on-coming wildfire (I recommend the Ergo), but then I saw a
movie that I have to tell you about. As background, we watch a
lot of foreign films. I think the subtitles are my husband's
way of making me sit still for a couple of hours.
Anyway, the other night he brought home an Inuit movie.
Yes, there is such a thing, called Atanarjuat - The Fast
Runner. And peppered throughout the movie was a woman using a
traditional baby carrier (called Amautik, Amautiq, or Amauti)
to haul her toddler around. The Amautik is a coat,
traditionally made of skin (seal, I think), with a pouch on
the back, as well as a huge hood. The baby (or water, food, or
anything else that needs hauling and warmth) is placed in the
pouch and kept nice and cozy next to mom (men don't wear the
Amautik).
We have several links on our resources page to more
information about these carriers (see below). But what a
wonderful thing to see them in action! Don't look for
Peppermint to start carrying this style, though. They are
custom made, by hand, and generally run about $350 to $500
(again, see resources page). Those of you in Minnesota and
Canada are great candidates!
This picture was sent in by a reader. She said that this
Amautik got her and her daughter through a -30'C (- 25'F)
winter, and comfortably! It has a quilted inner layer, and
then another outer layer. Like the Mei Tais in traditional
Chinese and Hmong cultures, the Amautiks are generally made by
women for themselves or their friends and family.

| New Products: Moby Wrap and New Native Baby
Carriers |
 |
Many of you were wondering about the beautiful red
wraparound carrier that my pregnant friend was wearing in the
last newsletter. Well, it's here, and it's the Moby Wrap! It
is a buttery 100% cotton, stretchy and cozy, without being too
bouncy. I love this carrier for newborns and pregnancy.
We also added the New Native Baby Carrier to our lineup.
While it is new to us, it is a tried and true pouch- style
sling. This sleek pouch is small enough for your diaper bag or
glove compartment, and a great option for those new to
babywearing and looking for something simple.
We are offering our newsletter readers 10% off of these baby
carriers for the next two weeks (until November 30). (This
coupon will work for 10% off of the Maya Wrap Adjustable
Pouches in the EU and UK stores.)
