In this issue: "Big and Tall" Baby Carrier options |
|
I hope this letter finds you all well. I am frequently asked what baby carrier options are available to "big and tall" parents. Now, "big and tall" may mean different things to different people, so I will just give a general rundown of carriers and their upper limits. Ring Slings: Maya Wrap makes an XL size that easily fits people in the 300 lb. range, and would certainly fit very tall people. Rosado Sling makes an XXL that is sized for up to 6'8" and 350 lbs. Wraparound Baby Carriers : With these, it is harder to determine the upper limit, as height, weight, and torso length all play into the fit. The 5.0 m length will definitely fit up to about 250 lbs, for the wraps that require the most fabric (wrap cross and cross carry). Also, even if the 5.0 m is too short for these wraps, it can be used for the shorter versions, like the short wrap cross, hip cross, and rucksack. Pouch Slings: Two measurements are needed to fit the pouch well: 1. top of shoulder bone to opposite hip bone - the upper limit for the Maya Pouch is about 31", and 2. around the chest, above the breasts - the upper limit is about 45". (Note: Maya Wrap has just designed an adjustable pouch, which we will be stocking sometime next week. I don't have the measurements on it, yet, but will let you know next month.) Tie-on Slings: (I am including the one-shouldered types here, like the rebozo and selendang, although on the website this category includes all of our slings that use knots.) This is hard to determine, also, but the key is to buy the slings that are at least 100" long, such as the Extra Fino Especial Rebozo. This will give you the most sling to play with. Back Carriers: I will mention two here, that I think are worth considering. The Podegi is versatile in its sizing, because it wraps around and ties. This carrier actually works better on people with enough curves to secure the carrier. The Ergo Baby Carrier is worth mentioning because it is one of our most popular carriers. It is currently being redesigned to fit up to about a 50" waist, which is a very welcome change. I hope this helps you think about baby sling and carrier options. If anyone has more information for me, such as personal experience with a particular carrier, I would very much like to hear from you! Well, some may say that I am addicted to wraparound carriers - and so be it. We have added yet another! This is a temporary stock, as I have something else coming next month that will fit the same bill - surprises, surprises! This month we are offering our newsletter readers 10% off of this new sling for the next two weeks (until July 24). Some of you have already noticed that we have opened a new store serving the UK community (with an EU store soon to come!). Now, don't laugh, but the physical location is actually in Italy. We are actively adding stock to make it possible for our European customers to pay for their orders in local currency, and to receive their slings and carriers without worrying about duties and/or shipping delays. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law will be taking very good care of all of our European customers. And of course I am still available for any questions and comments. So if you are across the pond, check us out! UK.Peppermint.com FAA Baby Carrier Regulations Update I have talked previously about traveling with baby, and I have an update for you. I recently read that the FAA has modified their regulations to say that you can walk through the X-ray machines with your baby in a cloth carrier. I am actively trying to verify this, so if anyone has a link or phone number for me, I would appreciate an email. How are we doing? I like to hear and see how your slings are working out for you. If you get a spare moment in your busy, busy schedules, I would love a note and a picture. If you like what you have read here, I would greatly appreciate it if you would forward this to a friend - or two! Thanks for your support! And have a good month. ~Vesta Hartman Garcia ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We would be delighted if you would join our (no more than) monthly newsletter.
